A Special Report from Tileagd Nursery
on the UK Visit - February 2008

On February 11th, 2008, Mrs. Hazel Jaques, head teacher and host for the week, welcomed and introduced Delia and Lidia to all the staff and children of Ashbourne Hilltop School during the morning assembly.

Delia at Hilltop“It was a pleasant and positive experience to spend time in the nursery every morning - and then to spend the afternoons in the reception class and main school. We soon realised that the curriculum is very similar to the Romanian one for the nursery, but it’s quite different once you get in school. In nursery and kindergarten we have the same areas of learning: Communication, Language and Literacy; Mathematics; Knowledge and Understanding of the World; Personal and Social Development; Physical Development; Creative Development.

We were also part of a staff meeting, which we found similar to the ones we have in our nursery and school in Tileagd. It was good to see that no matter if you are a Romanian or English nursery, the main purposes are the same: to develop a learning environment where everyone feels valued and respected, to maintain high standards of achievement, to build on the success of the past and prepare for developments of the future.

I would like to thank very much everyone that made it possible us to be part of this educational exchange for a week! This opportunity came from last year’s Educational Challenge and we have learned so much from our time at Hill Top. It is good to develop professional partnerships like this.”

Delia Bideran: Director of Tileagd Nursery, Romania

Lidia with the children at Hilltop “I have always wanted to see how the educational system works in another country - and I would like to thank those who gave us this opportunity. I have to say that it has been a very enjoyable and beneficial educational exchange, where I could see and learn so many new things. In some ways the Romanian system is similar to the English educational system, (e.g. the same curricular areas and management of the class); but there are also some differences, like the methods and ways used in the teaching-learning process, (e.g. working in groups), achieving some skills and concepts earlier than our children do, such as: reading, writing and counting).

The staff and children were all friendly, open and cooperative, answering our questions and offering us so much information. I learned a great deal from my visit and have many new ideas to introduce for my children.”
